Yoji Fujito: Following the release of Seekers of Adoulin, our efforts have been directed toward expanding solo gameplay. Related: Final Fantasy 14 - 10 Things We Still Wish Would be Added From FF 11Īre there any plans to make the game even more accessible to newcomers or solo players? I know great steps have already been taken over the years, but have you considered going back and making old content easier for new players to complete and enjoy? We haven’t considered anything specific in terms of a combined subscription with FFXIV. However, based on current operations for FFXI, we determined that it wouldn’t be fitting. Is there ever a chance of Final Fantasy XI going free-to-play, or having some kind of combined subscription with FFXIV?Īkihiko Matsui: Going free-to-play is something we’ve considered in the past. FFXI is a game with a massive amount of content, so I think it would be pretty difficult for an opportunity to arise where everything could be included, but I have a feeling that we might see certain characters or certain areas appearing in other games in the future as well. This is thanks to the fans’ support over the past several years, and I think this could mean that we might even be able to keep going past our twentieth anniversary as long as the fans keep supporting us.Īkihiko Matsui: Currently, FFXI characters and an FFXI battle stage, Stellar Fulcrum, appear in DISSIDIA FINAL FANTASY. Up until now, we had been creating short-term development and operation schedules that only covered a year at a time, but now we have been working on longer-term plans that cover three years. At the very least we will keep going until our twentieth anniversary in 2022. What does the future of FFXI look like? How many more years do you see for the game (or hope for)?Īkihiko Matsui: Last year, we announced that we are continuing services with the initial goal of reaching our 20 th anniversary. I hope that we can motivate each other so that we can provide enjoyment for both FFXI and FFXIV players. They are our allies, but at the same time, I like to think (at the risk of being too forward) that we also have a friendly rivalry with them. The FFXIV team includes many members who were former FFXI developers or players. However, due in part to the differences that lie in the nature of these two games, we’ve been able to continue service for FFXI as well. Additionally, FFXIV is staffed by many individuals who also have a history of development on FFXI, and we’ve even had a collaboration event in the past as well.Īkihiko Matsui: Originally, the launch of FINAL FANTASY XIV was supposed to have marked the end of FINAL FANTASY XI’s role as our main MMO title. There’s no way we wouldn’t have been affected by it, and we’ve taken a lot of inspiration from it in both our way of thinking, and even in implementing similar features that we felt would turn out well if we incorporated them with a FINAL FANTASY XI feel. Yoji Fujito: FINAL FANTASY XIV is a title that I feel is the embodiment of the modern-day MMORPG. Has the success of Final Fantasy XIV changed the future of Final Fantasy XI? At the same time, has the XI team worked with the XIV team in any way? Fujito has served as Final Fantasy XI's director since 2016, while Matsui has served as producer since 2012. Director Yoji Fujito and Producer Akihiko Matsui spoke with Screen Rant about the game's anniversary, legacy, and potential future.
